A noter avant la reservation: le departement de conservation de la faune a ferme les blocs 1 et 2 du parc national de Yala du 14 septembre au 15 octobre 2026 en raison de la secheresse, les safaris dans ces blocs ne peuvent donc pas avoir lieu a ces dates. Les blocs 3 a 6 restent ouverts, et Udawalawe et Wilpattu ne sont pas affectes, pour un voyage dans cette periode nous vous contacterons pour deplacer le safari vers l'un de ces parcs ou a une date apres le 15 octobre. Udawalawe est le parc le plus fort pour les elephants, Wilpattu offre des observations de leopards plus tranquilles.

Arugam Bay fonctionne sur un calendrier oppose au reste de l'itineraire sri-lankais classique. Sa saison s'etend approximativement de mai a septembre, exactement quand la mousson du sud-ouest agite les cotes sud et ouest, ce qui en fait la destination ideale pour un voyage d'ete europeen qui serait sinon un compromis.

Y arriver depuis Ella signifie traverser le sud-est, et Yala se trouve sur le chemin. Cela fait du jour de transfert le moment judicieux pour le parc plutot qu'un aller-retour.

Le bloc 1 abrite la plus haute densite enregistree de leopards au monde, ainsi que des ours lippus, des elephants, des buffles d'eau, des crocodiles, et plus de deux cents especes d'oiseaux. Lors d'une matinee chargee en saison, il abrite aussi environ trois cents jeeps; les deux choses sont vraies.

Le trajet a l'aube est le seul qui vaille la peine: les animaux se deplacent a la premiere lumiere et s'abritent vers neuf heures.

Apres le parc, la route remonte la cote au nord via Panama vers Arugam Bay et Pottuvil, et le paysage change vers un maquis sec, des lagons et de longues plages desertes. L'extremite de ce tronçon borde le parc national de Kumana, l'une des meilleures zones d'observation des oiseaux du pays et presque jamais visitee.

Hors saison de surf, une grande partie d'Arugam Bay ferme et les vagues s'aplatissent, verifiez donc vos dates avant de reserver.
