Heeloya est un village agricole dans les collines a l'est de Kandy, et c'est la version longue de la visite, dix heures plutot que huit, avec le temps de s'asseoir entre les activites plutot que de passer de l'une a l'autre.

La matinee est consacree a la terre. Vous marchez dans les rizieres avec un hote local et l'irrigation est expliquee: le reservoir, les canaux, l'ordre dans lequel les champs recoivent l'eau. Le Sri Lanka fait fonctionner ce systeme depuis deux mille ans et c'est une piece d'ingenierie plutot qu'un detail pittoresque.

La culture biologique est l'autre moitie. Ce sont de petites exploitations, pas des plantations, et les parcelles d'epices cultivent le poivre, la cardamome, le curcuma et la cannelle parmi les cultures alimentaires plutot qu'en rangs de monoculture, ce qui est a la fois la maniere dont cela s'est toujours fait et pourquoi le sol tient bon.

Le dejeuner se cuisine dans une maison de village avec votre aide, noix de coco rapee sur un hiramanaya, pate d'epices moulue sur une pierre, pots en argile sur un feu de bois, et se mange avec la famille qui vous a aide a le preparer.

Les heures supplementaires par rapport a la version demi-journee se passent l'apres-midi: une charrette a boeufs, une marche, et assez de temps pour que la journee cesse de ressembler a un horaire.

Kandy fut la derniere capitale des rois cinghalais, resistant aux Portugais et aux Hollandais jusqu'a ce que les Britanniques la prennent en 1815, et le Temple de la Sainte Dent Relique sur le lac explique son importance: la relique, consideree comme une dent du Bouddha, est l'objet le plus sacre de l'ile et sa garde legitimait autrefois la royaute. La chambre de la relique ouvre pour le puja trois fois par jour, vers 5h30, 9h30 et 18h30, quand les tambours commencent et que la file avance devant le reliquaire. La tenue couvre epaules et genoux, les chaussures se retirent a l'entree, et l'Esala Perahera en juillet ou aout fait parader le reliquaire sur un elephant a travers la ville pendant dix nuits.

Danu remek vezető volt, rengeteg érdekes dolgot mesélt a faluról, az emberekről, növényekről, állatokról. Minden kérdésünk válaszolt és nagyon jót fürödtem a vízesésnél. Az ebéd is nagyon finom volt.
