Description complète

Le reservoir de Minneriya a ete construit au troisieme siecle de notre ere et c'est la raison de l'un des plus grands spectacles naturels d'Asie. A mesure que la saison seche avance et que l'eau disparait ailleurs, le fond du reservoir devient un nouveau paturage, et les elephants y convergent depuis toute la foret environnante, quelques centaines d'animaux au meme endroit, se nourrissant, se baignant et socialisant. C'est ce qu'on appelle le Rassemblement, et rien d'autre en Asie ne concentre les elephants sauvages ainsi.

Le timing compte plus que tout le reste. Le Rassemblement s'intensifie durant les mois secs, approximativement de juin a septembre, et en saison humide les troupeaux se dispersent dans la foret et le reservoir se remplit. Le parc que la jeep utilise depend d'ou se trouvent reellement les animaux cette semaine-la: Minneriya, Kaudulla et le parc ecologique de Hurulu se trouvent tous a une demi-heure l'un de l'autre et les operateurs se deplacent entre eux, c'est pourquoi la reservation en nomme plus d'un.

L'apres-midi est le moment a choisir, les elephants descendent vers l'eau en fin de journee, et la lumiere est meilleure. Trois heures dans le parc avec un chauffeur et un traqueur qui le parcourent quotidiennement.

Un depose ultérieur a Kandy ou ailleurs peut generalement s'organiser a la place d'un retour, ce qui en fait une bonne facon de scinder une journee de transfert.
