Description complète

We got from Sigiriya to Nuwara Eliya safely. However, based on the description, we were expecting a bit more from the trip. The spice garden is a bit of a rip-off. They explain a lot here, and you can buy the products afterwards for a lot of money. One drawback was that we were recommended weight loss pills 4-5 times... Plus, tipping is expected at several stops (which I hadn't anticipated beforehand). In the end, we saw the temple in Dambulla, the spice garden, the market in Kandy, the waterfall (from very far away), and the tea plantation. That was a real highlight, and a pack of tea cost around €7 here. Also, the tea cake was super tasty! Our driver was super friendly, but a bit reserved.

Hotel pickup in Sigiriya or Dambulla; confirmed after booking.
The price does not cover entrance fees at dambulla and elsewhere, meals and drinks, spice purchases, gratuities.. Everything it does cover is listed in full on this page, so if something is not on that list, budget for it separately.
Unless the option says private, this runs as a small group. The operator caps it rather than filling a coach, and if you want it to yourselves the private option is priced separately on this page.

Be at the gate for the 6am opening, so leave Nuwara Eliya around 5am. World's End faces south and clouds over by nine or ten as warm air rises off the plain — arrive at eleven and you see a white wall. See our Horton Plains guide.
The town sits at about 1,900 m and drops to around 10°C at night, and few hotels have heating. Horton Plains at 2,300 m regularly sits near freezing before dawn, with ground frost from December to February. Bring a genuine warm layer — most visitors underestimate this.
No — they close on poya days, the monthly full moon and a public holiday in Sri Lanka. If your free day is a poya, take an estate walk with a plucker instead. Plucking happens in the morning; by afternoon the slopes are empty.
Mostly leaf size, not quality. OP is a long wiry whole leaf, BOP is smaller and broken, and fannings and dust go into teabags because the higher surface area brews fast. Bigger leaf is slower tea, not better tea. Explained in our Ceylon tea guide.
At a factory, not a tourist shop. Factory shops carry the higher grades that never reach a visitor shelf; the boxed tea on the main streets is usually fannings at visitor prices.
Nanu Oya, about 10 km and a 20-30 minute drive from the town. Nuwara Eliya has no station of its own, and tuk-tuk fares at Nanu Oya rise sharply the moment a train arrives.
Roughly 1,200 steps, about 180 m above the plain, with handrails the whole way. Entry is around USD 30-35 for foreign adults — one of South Asia's priciest tickets — paid in cash. Climb at the 7am opening: there is no shade above the frescoes. Full detail in our Sigiriya rock guide.
It is cheaper and has the better view — of Sigiriya. What it does not have is the water gardens, frescoes, mirror wall, lion's paws or summit palace. For the photograph, take Pidurangala. For the site, take Sigiriya. Compared properly in our Sigiriya rock guide.
Roughly June to September, peaking in August, when the shrinking reservoir exposes fresh grass and several hundred elephants converge. Outside those months the herds disperse and you get a normal safari. Operators switch between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu depending on where the herds are — that is them doing their job. See our Minneriya gathering guide.
Five caves under one granite overhang, in continuous use since the 1st century BC, holding around 150 Buddha images and 2,100 m² of painting. The approach is a steep 15-minute climb; shoes come off at the top terrace, so bring socks. See the Dambulla cave temple guide.
Polonnaruwa if you have one morning — compact, cyclable in three hours, and the Gal Vihara is the finest sculpture in the country. Anuradhapura if you have a full day and an interest in living Buddhism; it is a thousand years older and still an active pilgrimage city. See Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura.
Sigiriya is in the dry zone and follows the *northeast* monsoon — its wet season is October to January, the opposite of Colombo. Best months are May to September, which is also the elephant Gathering. See best time to visit Sigiriya.
Two nights in Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana. Day 1: the rock at 7am, Dambulla late morning, a 3pm safari. Day 2: Polonnaruwa by bicycle or Pidurangala at sunrise. Our Sigiriya 2-day itinerary sets out the order and why it matters.
