GWK Cultural Park: The 121-Metre Statue, the Show Times, and Whether It Is Worth the Ticket

Garuda Wisnu Kencana is a statue of the god Vishnu riding the eagle Garuda, 121 metres from the ground to the top of Garuda's wings, standing on a limestone plateau at Ungasan on the Bukit peninsula. The sculptor Nyoman Nuarta began it in 1990; the copper and brass sections were assembled in 2018, 28 years later, making it one of the tallest statues in the world and by some distance the largest on Bali. It is visible from the airport approach and from most of the peninsula.

The park around it was cut out of the plateau's old limestone quarry, which is why the plazas are walled by sheer white cliffs; the cliffs are the second thing people photograph.

The park is a series of plazas at different levels: the Lotus Pond, the huge flat arena walled by cliffs where the big events are staged; the Wisnu Plaza with the older head-and-shoulders statue from the 1990s; the Garuda Plaza; and the Street Theatre where the daily dances run. The main statue can be entered, with a lift to viewing floors inside it, for a separate ticket. There are restaurants, and a shuttle between the levels for anyone who does not want the stairs in the heat. Two hours covers it without rushing.

Balinese dances run on a timetable through the day at the Street Theatre, usually a Barong and a Legong in the morning and afternoon, with a Kecak in the early evening and occasionally a larger production at the Lotus Pond. They are included in the entry and they are decent, but the Kecak here competes with the one at Uluwatu temple at sunset, twenty minutes away, and the temple's cliff setting wins. For the statue and the quarry cliffs, yes, once, especially with children or on a day too hot for the beaches. It is a built attraction rather than a historic site, and people who expect a temple are disappointed. Go from about 3:00 when the light softens, do the plazas and a show, and leave for Uluwatu by 5:00. It combines well with the Melasti beach road, which is ten minutes south, and with a Jimbaran seafood dinner afterwards.
