7-Day Tokyo, Kanazawa, Kyoto and Hiroshima by Rail
Full description
This is a 7-day experience from Hiroshima, built around Narita Express into Tokyo Station and Peace Memorial Park and the floating torii. It is run by OlaChill Travel & Technology, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Tokyo is the largest city on earth by metropolitan population and it is best seen as a set of neighbourhoods on the Yamanote loop line rather than one place. Asakusa has Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple, and Nakamise's shopping lane; Shibuya has the scramble crossing and Shinjuku the bars of Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho; Harajuku is Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine's forest; Akihabara is electronics and anime; Ginza is department stores and sushi counters. Everything runs on time and the last trains are around midnight. Cash still matters in small restaurants, an IC card covers every train and bus, and tipping is not done anywhere.
The price covers 7-day Japan Rail Pass covering all Shinkansen, All seat reservations booked in advance for you, JR ferry crossing to Miyajima, Private Toyota Alphard with English-speaking driver for all and All highway tolls. It does not cover Hotels and accommodation, Meals and drinks, Admission tickets to observation decks and Licensed English-speaking guide, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Hotel pickup in Hiroshima. OlaChill Travel & Technology confirms your pickup time and the exact spot once the booking is in. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with OlaChill Travel & Technology before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.
Tour Itinerary
The schedule below is a suggested plan and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.
Narita Express into Tokyo Station
Your driver meets you at Narita or Haneda and you ride the Narita Express into Tokyo Station on your rail pass. After hotel check-in there is an easy first evening: Tokyo Station's Character Street underneath the platforms and the red-brick Marunouchi facade lit up outside. Around four hours, mostly for settling in and beating the jet lag gently.
Senso-ji, Akihabara, Harajuku and Shibuya
A full day using the railway as the sightseeing. Senso-ji in Asakusa first thing, incense smoke and the Nakamise approach. Then a loop on the Yamanote line: Ueno's park and museums, the electronics arcades of Akihabara, Harajuku's back streets, and finally the Shibuya scramble crossing at its busiest. Nine hours with your driver on hand between stops.
Kenroku-en, Higashi Chaya and Omicho Market
A morning Hokuriku Shinkansen carries you north-west in under three hours, the Japan Alps out of the left-hand windows. In Kanazawa you walk Kenroku-en, one of Japan's three great strolling gardens, the wooden lattice fronts of the Higashi Chaya teahouse district, and Omicho Market, where the crab and sea urchin come off the boats that morning.
Kiyomizu-dera, the old lanes and Gion at dusk
The Thunderbird limited express runs south beside Lake Biwa into Kyoto. The afternoon is Higashiyama: Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage over the city, the stone lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, and then Gion at dusk, when the lanterns come on along the teahouse fronts and the Shirakawa canal.
Torii tunnels at dawn and the bamboo grove
An early JR Nara line train to Fushimi Inari, walking up through the tunnels of vermilion torii gates before the crowds arrive. Late morning the Sagano line takes you out to Arashiyama for the bamboo grove, Togetsukyo Bridge and the riverside, with the option of the Sagano Romantic Train along the gorge.
Peace Memorial Park and the floating torii
Ninety minutes west on the Nozomi Shinkansen to Hiroshima. The morning is the Peace Memorial Park, the A-Bomb Dome and the museum. In the afternoon the JR ferry crosses to Miyajima, where the great torii gate stands in the water at high tide and the oysters are grilled along the street.
Dotonbori lunch and the Haruka to the airport
A last Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka, then a farewell lunch in Dotonbori under the neon along the canal. Your driver takes your luggage while you walk. Early afternoon the Haruka limited express runs out to Kansai International Airport, all of it still on your rail pass.
