Full description

This is a 1.5-hour experience in Nara. It is run by Kurabi, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.

The price covers 5 kinds of Japanese tea, Matcha and Japanese sweet. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

Kurabi sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Kurabi before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Includes

  • 5 kinds of Japanese tea

The entire atmosphere was so calm, dignified and friendly. We also learned ftom one of the hosts about his particular craft, the making of the bamboo tea whisks used to mix tje matcha tea. The tea was delicioys, too )and normally I am more of a coffee drinker!).

It was an authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony experience. The host was very sweet and kind. The tea shop is in a 120 year old Japanese house with a beautiful view of a small garden. 10/10 would recommend.

Wow, Mike was just absolutely amazing and the whole tea ceremony was such a great experience. It was so personal, authentic, a beautiful setting and just all around such a memorable experience. We learned so much about tea culture and he answered all of our questions and we just ended up chatting for a while with him afterwards. I can’t recommend this enough it was a highlight of our trip in Japan and far from touristy which we loved :)

Authentic and engaging; Mike welcomes only 4 guest into his 125-year old wooden house, overlooking a beautiful Japanese garden. He guides us through the ceremony with all symbols and rituals. The picture illustrating this ad has nothing to with this experience which is authentic and quiet. You need to be able to walk to the house and sit still on the floor for about two hours - don’t be in a rush. ”The highlight of our trip” stated one of our teenagers.

This is the perfect tour for tea lovers. We learned a lot and found more than one favorite tea. We also learnt how to prepare matcha tea in the tea room. Mike was a very nice host with a good sense of humor and we felt very welcome. Overall it was one of the best tours we have experienced.

Yes, if you tell us when you book rather than on the day. Dashi, the fish stock, is in almost everything, so vegetarian and vegan need to be named specifically and the host will plan a kombu-based version. Halal-certified restaurants exist in the big cities but are fewer, so say so early.
We confirm your booking with the operator before we treat it as final, and we need at least one day's notice. Once it is confirmed you get the meeting point, the time and a contact number for the day. If the operator cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.
