Most travelers visit Nara as a half- or full-day trip from Kyoto (about 45 minutes) or Osaka (about 45 minutes), since the main sights cluster around Nara Park. Staying overnight, however, lets you enjoy the temples at dawn and dusk without the day-tripper crowds — a quieter, magical experience.
Is it safe to feed the deer in Nara Park?
Yes — the deer are wild but accustomed to people, and you can buy 'shika senbei' (deer crackers) from vendors to feed them. Many deer famously bow for food. Hold crackers high and feed quickly, keep bags closed, and supervise small children, as the deer can be pushy when hungry. Your guide will show you the etiquette.
