Full description

Amanohashidate is one of the Nihon Sankei, the three views classically held to be the finest in Japan, alongside Miyajima's floating torii and Matsushima Bay. It is a sandbar three and a half kilometres long, covered in several thousand pines, cutting almost all the way across a bay on the Sea of Japan coast — and it has been drawing visitors since the seventeenth century, long before tourism existed as an idea.

The local custom is to look at it upside down. You stand on the viewpoint above, bend forward and look back between your legs, at which point the sandbar appears to hang in the sky and the name — bridge to heaven — makes sense. It is called the matanozoki and everyone does it, without embarrassment.

Ine is the second half and the quieter pleasure. It is a fishing village on a sheltered bay where about 230 funaya — boathouses with the boat garage at water level and the living quarters above — stand in an unbroken row directly on the water. Nothing about it is staged; people live and fish there, and the reflections of the wooden facades in a still bay in the late afternoon are the reason photographers make the trip.

Be aware of what is not included. The cable car up to the Amanohashidate viewpoint and the Ine sightseeing boat are not in the price by default; the guide can help you buy them once you are aboard the coach. Meals are also excluded.

Departures run from Nipponbashi Station Exit 2 in Osaka or the Hachijoguchi sightseeing bus area at Kyoto Station, and the day runs about ten hours.
