Nara Sake Walk with Tastings
Full description
Nara has a serious claim to being where refined sake brewing began. The temple Shoryaku-ji, in the hills south-east of the city, is credited with developing early bodaimoto starter techniques that shaped how sake has been made ever since. This three-hour walk takes that history as its starting point and then does the obvious thing with it: puts glasses in front of you and lets a guide explain what you are tasting.
You meet at Kintetsu Nara Station and are drinking within a couple of minutes' walk, at a local bar where the guided tasting portion runs about 25 minutes. The rest of the tour is a walking circuit of the surrounding streets between stops, taking in specialty sake shops and the ordinary back lanes of a city most visitors only see between the temple gates. Your guide covers the basics without turning it into a lecture: what junmai and ginjo actually mean, how polishing ratios change a sake's character, and why Nara brewers still talk about their monastic predecessors. The loop returns to Kintetsu Nara Station where it started.
It is a small-group experience and a good counterweight to a day spent on the temple circuit, especially in the late afternoon when Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha are winding down. Come hungry enough to handle several tastings, and treat this as a drinking tour rather than a sightseeing one; the deer and the Great Buddha are a short walk away but are not part of the route.

The whole route is on foot and covers a compact area around central Nara, with no long walks between stops. You must be of legal drinking age in Japan, which is 20, and bring photo ID. Non-drinkers can join but the tour is built around tastings, so the value drops considerably. Tell the operator in advance about allergies, as some stops serve small food pairings.
