Nara's World Heritage Core: Private Half-Day Walk to Kofuku-ji, Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha

Four sites, forty-five minutes at each, one guide and only your own party: this half-day walk is the efficient version of Nara. It starts either at Kintetsu Nara Station, a few minutes from the park gates, or at Kyoto Station if you would rather travel out with your guide, and it sticks to the World Heritage core of the old capital instead of scattering across the prefecture.

You begin at Kofuku-ji, whose five-storey pagoda is the silhouette most people photograph without knowing the name; the temple was the clan temple of the Fujiwara and once wielded enough power to raise its own armies. From there the route crosses Nara Park, home to more than a thousand wild sika deer that have been protected for centuries as messengers of Takemikazuchi and were made a National Natural Treasure in 1957. Todai-ji follows, where the Daibutsu, roughly fifteen metres of cast bronze, was dedicated in 752 CE and sits inside a hall rebuilt in 1709 at two-thirds of its original width yet still ranked among the largest wooden buildings in the world. The walk finishes at Kasuga Taisha, founded in 768 CE, approached through wooded avenues hung and stacked with thousands of stone and bronze lanterns donated by worshippers over more than a millennium.

Half a day is enough for these four because they sit close together, and having a guide means you get the connections between them rather than four separate stops. Nara is about 35 to 40 minutes from Osaka and roughly 45 from Kyoto, so this pairs easily with an afternoon back in either city.
