Fushimi Inari and Nara on Foot: The Shared Five-Hour Version

Fushimi Inari and Nara usually appear on itineraries as two separate photo stops. Taken together and in order, they are something better: a walk through the two religious systems that shaped Japan, and the point where one absorbed the other.

The day starts at Fushimi Inari, on the southern edge of Kyoto. The senbon torii — thousands of vermilion gates packed close enough to form tunnels up the mountainside — are the most photographed thing in Japan, and almost nobody who photographs them knows what they are. Each gate was paid for by a business, whose name is carved on the reverse, as thanks for a favour granted. Inari is the deity of rice, and therefore of harvest, and therefore of commerce; the foxes everywhere are the messengers. Then Nara, and a different religion entirely. Buddhism arrived from the continent in the sixth century, and Nara is where the state adopted it at scale. The deer in the park belong to the older system — Shinto messengers, protected for centuries, which is why they wander through a city of 350,000 people without concern. Todai-ji is where the new one announced itself: a bronze Buddha fifteen metres high, cast in the eighth century at a cost that nearly bankrupted the country, inside a wooden hall built to hold it.
