Asuka by E-Bike: Rice Terraces, the Ishibutai Tomb and Nara's Strangest Stones

Asuka is where Japan started, and almost nobody goes. Before Nara and long before Kyoto, this valley in the hills south of Nara City held the imperial court, took in Buddhism from the continent, and produced the first recognisable Japanese state. It became a UNESCO World Heritage listing recently, and it still looks like farmland — terraced rice paddies, wooden farmhouses, low hills, and stone monuments sitting in fields with nobody around them.

E-bikes are the right tool here. The distances between sites are a few kilometres and the ground rolls constantly; electric assist flattens it so you spend the ride looking at the landscape rather than at your own knees. You collect the bikes at the meeting point in Asuka village and ride out through the paddies.

The Ishibutai Kofun is the centrepiece: a seventh-century burial chamber whose earth mound eroded away, leaving the megalithic stones fully exposed. The capstone alone weighs about seventy tonnes, and you walk inside. Nobody is certain who is buried there, though the prevailing theory points at Soga no Umako.

The stranger stops come after. Kame-ishi, the Turtle Stone, and Sakafune-ishi, the Sake-Ship Stone, are carved granite objects whose purpose is genuinely unknown — theories run from astronomical instruments to ritual vessels to garden ornaments, and none of them is settled. Your guide will give you the competing arguments rather than a tidy answer, which is more honest and considerably more interesting.

Groups cap at fifteen. Basic riding ability is all that is needed. The appeal here is the absence of other people, so if Kyoto has worn you down, this is the antidote.
