Full description
This is a 2-hour experience in Nara, built around NaramachiOn foot, Sarusawanoike pond and Gangoji Temple. It is run by Tours 2 Nara, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Nara was Japan's first permanent capital, from 710 to 784, and its park holds Todai-ji, whose Great Buddha Hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world and contains a 15-metre bronze Buddha cast in 752, Kasuga Taisha with its three thousand lanterns, and about 1,200 sika deer that are considered messengers of the gods and are protected. The deer bow for the shika senbei crackers sold in the park and will butt anyone who teases them. Nara is 45 minutes from Kyoto or Osaka by train and is a half-day; Todai-ji before 10:00 is the quiet hour.
The price covers A local guide who knows where the bodies are buried, One rental chochin lantern to light the way.... and to see, The kind of silence between stories that makes you wish and A new appreciation for why Nara empties out after sunset. It does not cover Meals and drinks, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Starbucks Coffee - Nara Sarusawa Pond. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Tours 2 Nara before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Traveler Reviews
Claudio was very gracious and passionate about Nara's history. I had know idea how far the legends of this ancient city goes back. I was captivated and wanted to learn more. Claudio was eager to help and sent links and names to stories of the old and terrifying. I highly recommend this tour to learn more about this culturally rich, beautiful and creepy city. Thank you for the experience.
Claudio, the host, was fantastic. We walked new and interesting areas of Nara, that we wouldn’t have discovered on our own. We learned some history and interesting things about Japan and Nara. The ghost stories were great. We really enjoyed the tour. Thank you Claudio!
We had a really nice and intimate walking tour with our guide Claudio. Got to see parts of Nara completely void of tourists, and we learned more than just supernatural tales. We had a local lady with us, and she also seemed to have learned a lot about her hometown. Recommended if you stay after dark! 👻
