Nara was Japan's first permanent capital, from 710 to 784, and its park holds Todai-ji, whose Great Buddha Hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world and contains a 15-metre bronze Buddha cast in 752, Kasuga Taisha with its three thousand lanterns, and about 1,200 sika deer that are considered messengers of the gods and are protected. The deer bow for the shika senbei crackers sold in the park and will butt anyone who teases them. Nara is 45 minutes from Kyoto or Osaka by train and is a half-day; Todai-ji before 10:00 is the quiet hour.

We had a fantastic day in Nara. Our guide Junichi was excellent. He is a Nara native and spoke excellent English. He was also a high school teacher, therefore we had top notch education for our tour! I highly recommend him and this tour.

Haru provided us with an excellent private tour of Nara, using public transportation from Kyoto. This was our last full day in Japan and we were not disappointed! Haru is an enthusiastic guide and clearly enjoys sharing his knowledge and showing off the sights. Amazing day in Nara with Ken! He is a lively, retired Japanese engineer, living between Kyoto and Nara, who has worked in the Chicago area while at Panasonic, making him perfectly fluent in English. He was very kind, knowledgeable, flexible (we had to start a bit later and finish a bit earlier than planned) and patient with our teenage boys, made us discover gems in Nara (Great Buddha statue, imperial palace site, including a fascinating bit on ancient building techniques, World Heritage gardens, etc.). Tailored to our requests, Rie took us through Nara in one day perfectly. We enjoyed all the sites with Rie very much. She is a very knowledgeable guide and we experienced her as a kind and warm person, with great preparation. Shuji was brilliant, he took the time to plan our Nara day well ahead of our arrival and followed up multiple times before the day, making sure we got to see the things we wanted to see and making sure we didn’t miss out anything that was culturally significant and interesting.
