Japanese Calligraphy in Nara: Write a Kanji That Means Something

Calligraphy is the Japanese art that photographs worst and rewards doing most. On paper it looks like handwriting; in practice it is closer to a physical discipline, where the pressure of the brush, the speed of the stroke and the moment you lift determine everything, and there is no correcting a line once it is down.

The hour starts with you choosing a kanji character. Each is explained — harmony, peace, dream, love, strength — so the choice is yours and means something rather than being assigned. That single decision is what makes the session personal from the first minute.

Then the calligrapher writes your name in Japanese, which is consistently the moment guests remember: seeing your own name rendered in brush strokes, in a writing system you cannot read, is stranger and more affecting than it sounds. You practise writing it yourself afterwards — how to hold the brush upright, how much ink to load, how to move slowly and deliberately rather than sketching.

Instruction is one-to-one within a group capped at six, in clear and simple English. There is no rush and no expectation that anything will be good on a first attempt; the point of the hour is the rhythm and the concentration, which is why calligraphy has been treated as a meditative practice for centuries.

Your finished piece goes on a traditional shikishi board, the stiff square card used for displaying calligraphy, so it travels home flat and intact.

The studio is on the second floor of a building in Aburasaka, three minutes from JR Nara Station, and the room is wheelchair accessible. Kimono and hair styling are not part of this session.
