Full description

This is the budget-friendly, seat-on-a-coach version of the Kyoto and Nara day, and it is honest about what that means. You share the bus with other travellers, the schedule is fixed, and most of the time at each stop is free time rather than guided commentary. In exchange you cover three areas that are awkward to string together on public transport, for a fraction of the price of a private van. Departure is from one of two lounges, in Namba (Osaka) or in Kyoto, and you return to either at the end of the day.

Arashiyama gets the longest slot, around two and two-thirds hours, which is enough to cross the Togetsukyo Bridge over the Katsura River, walk through the bamboo grove and see the Kimono Forest installation of fabric-wrapped pillars beside the tram station. Nara Park follows with eighty minutes, the core of it spent with the deer. Over a thousand wild sika live in and around the park; they have been protected for centuries as messengers of the deity Takemikazuchi and were designated a National Natural Treasure in 1957. Vendors sell shika senbei crackers, and the deer are well practised at spotting them.

Fushimi Inari Taisha closes the day with another eighty minutes, mostly self-guided through the Senbon Torii, the dense corridor of vermilion gates climbing the hillside. Exact departure and return times vary by pickup point and season, so treat this as a full day of roughly ten hours and check your confirmed schedule. An optional lunch, including a Kobe beef choice, can be added at booking.
