Nara Early Morning Deer Park & Todai-ji Walk (Beat the Crowds)

Nara is one of Japan's most-visited day trips from Kyoto and Osaka, and by early afternoon its main sights are genuinely crowded — tour buses fill the Todai-ji approach and the deer in Nara Park are swarmed by visitors holding out shika senbei crackers. This tour is built around avoiding that entirely: it starts early, before the coach groups arrive, so you get Nara Park and the Great Buddha Hall while they are still calm.

Your guide meets you at Kintetsu Nara Station and walks you into Nara Park, home to over a thousand free-roaming sika deer considered messengers of the gods in Shinto belief. In the quiet of the morning you can actually watch the deer's odd, learned habit of bowing for crackers without fighting through crowds to do it. From there the walk continues to Todai-ji, the wooden hall housing the 15-metre bronze Daibutsu, one of the largest bronze Buddha statues in the world, cast in 752 CE.
