Full description

This is a dressing-and-photography package for one woman, not a guided tour: nobody walks you around explaining Nara's history. What you get is the most formal everyday kimono in the wardrobe and a photographer to record you wearing it. Furisode are the long-sleeved kimono traditionally worn by unmarried young women, and the plan pairs one with a silk fukuro obi, juban underlayer, zori, tabi socks, a bag and hair ornaments. A professional kitsuke dresser does the tying, which matters more than it sounds — an obi is genuinely difficult to knot on yourself, and a slack one shows in every photograph. Women's hair setting is included.

Dressing happens at Sakura Kimono Kyoto's Nara shop, second floor of 26-3 Hashimotocho. From there you head out for roughly one hour of snap photography with a photographer from Komorebi Studio in Osaka. The usual backdrops are Naramachi, the preserved Edo-period merchant quarter of dark-timbered machiya townhouses, and Nara Park, where more than a thousand wild sika deer are protected as messengers of the Shinto gods and have been a National Natural Treasure since 1957.

Afterwards the photographer sends all the original files plus twenty colour-corrected images of their own choosing, within one month of the shoot; the data is deleted two weeks after it is sent, so download promptly. Facial retouching and cosmetic edits are excluded. One point of honesty about the price: it reflects the operator's reduced event rate, offered between June and 10 September and only to guests who agree to their photos being used on the shop's social media. Outside that window, or if you would rather your images stayed private, the regular rate applies — confirm which applies to your date before booking.
