Nara Deer, Great Buddha & Mochi Walking Tour
Full description
Four hours, one guide, and a route that ends with something to eat. This walk covers the classic Nara sequence but adds two things the shorter tours skip: Naramachi, the preserved Edo-period merchant quarter of low wooden townhouses south of the main sites, and a traditional mochi tasting to finish. It is the lowest-priced full guided option in this batch, which makes it a reasonable choice if you are visiting Nara as a day trip and do not want to spend heavily before the train back.
You meet in Higashimuki Nakamachi, the covered shopping arcade just off Kintetsu Nara Station, and walk to Kofuku-ji, then into Nara Park, then Todai-ji. The Great Buddha there is a bronze figure of about fifteen metres dedicated in 752 CE, when Nara was Japan's first permanent capital under the name Heijo-kyo, a role it held for 74 years from 710. The current Daibutsuden dates from 1709 and is roughly two-thirds the width of the hall it replaced. Kasuga Taisha, founded in 768 CE and famous for the thousands of donated lanterns along its paths, follows before the walk drops down into Naramachi.
The deer get real attention rather than a passing mention. More than a thousand wild sika deer live in and around the park, protected as a National Natural Treasure since 1957 and regarded as messengers of the deity Takemikazuchi, and your guide will show you how to hand over shika senbei crackers without ending up surrounded. The walk finishes at the statue of Gyoki Bosatsu outside the station, which puts you a minute from your train.
