Full description

This is a 2.5-hour experience from Nara, built around Tango Tanimura. It is run by DeepExperience, Inc., an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Nara was Japan's first permanent capital, from 710 to 784, and its park holds Todai-ji, whose Great Buddha Hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world and contains a 15-metre bronze Buddha cast in 752, Kasuga Taisha with its three thousand lanterns, and about 1,200 sika deer that are considered messengers of the gods and are protected. The deer bow for the shika senbei crackers sold in the park and will butt anyone who teases them. Nara is 45 minutes from Kyoto or Osaka by train and is a half-day; Todai-ji before 10:00 is the quiet hour.

The price covers A guide, Chasen, Choose 1: chashaku carving and Premium includes all: tea ceremony. It does not cover Transportation to/from Tanimura Tango and Personal expenses, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

The day begun smoothly with Yoshi picking us from the train station. This was a requirement in my eyes because getting to the workshop in the village by bus is not easy! Yoshi was an excellent guide, with great English and a wealth of knowledge to share with us. At the workshop it was a complete honor to meet the Chasen master Tango Tanimura! Seeing first hand the master at work, and also learn the technique passed down from generation to generation was a humbling and beautiful experience. Mamy thanks to Tango san and Yoshi san for the great experience, will totally recommend everyone to go!

This experience was definitely one of the highlights of our Japan trip. It was an honor and a privilege to be able to watch and learn from Tanimura Tango himself as he demonstrates the craft of chasen making. Our guide, Benoit, was extremely helpful and professional as well. He even gave great recommendations on other local spots we should visit, which we appreciate. Would highly recommend this activity to anyone with an interest in matcha or in traditional Japanese crafts in general. Really worth it!

Yes, generally — they're unusually tame from centuries of protected contact with visitors.
