Naramachi, the old merchant quarter just south of Nara Park, is a grid of narrow lanes lined with Edo-period wooden townhouses (machiya), many now converted into cafes, craft shops and studios like this one. It's the natural setting for this two-part cultural experience: dressing in kimono, then sitting for a traditional tea ceremony, both rooted in practices that go back centuries in this exact part of the city.
The experience starts with kimono selection — a staff member helps you choose from a range of patterns and colours, then dresses you properly, including the obi sash, which takes real skill to tie correctly and is not something most visitors can manage alone. Once dressed, you have time to walk Naramachi's lanes in kimono for photos before or after the ceremony itself, a common and welcomed sight in this part of the city.
The tea ceremony that follows introduces the principles of chado, the Japanese "way of tea": precise, unhurried movements, seasonal sweets served before the bitter matcha to balance the flavour, and an etiquette of hospitality that dates to the 16th century under tea master Sen no Rikyu. Your host demonstrates the whisking and serving process and explains the meaning behind each step, then guides you through drinking your own bowl correctly. It's a genuinely calming, unhurried hour after Nara's more physically active sights, and a rare chance to sit inside an actual traditional machiya rather than a modern reconstruction.

Kimono sizes fit most adult body types; let the studio know in advance for larger or specific size needs. The ceremony portion is seated on tatami — light stretching beforehand helps if you're not used to sitting on the floor.
