Full description

This is a kimono rental and photo package rather than a guided tour, and the price shown is for two people together, one male and one female, not per person. It is run by Sakura Kimono Kyoto, a rental shop founded in Kyoto in 2017, from their Nara branch at 2F #201, 26-3 Hashimotocho in Nara city, a few minutes from the old streets of Naramachi and within easy reach of Nara Park. Booking slots run from 09:30 to 16:00, and the shop suggests early morning or after 3:00 p.m. in summer, since the middle of the day in Nara gets genuinely hot in full kimono.

At the shop you choose your garments, with the women's range running from premium kimono up to silk homongi, and a men's kimono for your partner. The full coordination is included: obi sash, either a han-haba obi or a silk Nagoya obi, with a silk fukuro obi if you pick a furisode, plus kimono bag, juban underlayer, zori sandals, tabi socks and hair accessories. Staff dress you properly, which matters more than it sounds, because an obi is close to impossible to tie correctly on yourself. Hair setting is included for the woman.

You then have about one hour of snap photography around Nara with a photographer from Komorebi Studio in Osaka, wearing the kimono out through the streets rather than posing in a studio. Afterwards you receive all the original photo data plus 20 colour-corrected images chosen by the photographer, sent within one month of the shoot; facial retouching is not included, and the data is deleted two weeks after delivery, so download it promptly. Payment at the shop is cash only, and a 2,000 JPY deposit confirms the reservation.

Tour Itinerary

Itineraries are customisable as per your request

The schedule below is a suggested plan and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.

Start

Arrive at the Nara shop

Meet at Sakura Kimono Kyoto's Nara branch, 2F #201, 26-3 Hashimotocho. Reservation slots run 09:30 to 16:00; the shop recommends early morning or after 3:00 p.m. in summer.

Step 2

Choose kimono and coordination

Pick your garments and receive the full set: obi (han-haba or silk Nagoya, or silk fukuro obi with a furisode), kimono bag, juban, zori, tabi socks and hair accessories.

Step 3

Dressing and hair setting

Professional kitsuke dressing by the shop staff; hair setting is included for the woman.

Step 4

One-hour photo shoot in Nara

Around an hour of snap photography out in Nara with a photographer from Komorebi Studio, Osaka.

After

Photo delivery

All original data plus 20 colour-corrected photos are sent within one month of the shoot; all data is deleted two weeks after it is sent.

Detailed Itinerary

You wear the kimono out around Nara for the shoot rather than staying in the shop, so the surrounding Naramachi merchant streets and the approach to Nara Park are the usual backdrops. Zori sandals are not built for long distances, so plan a short route. The photographer selects the 20 edited images; you cannot pick them yourself, though you do get every original frame. Download your files as soon as they arrive, because the studio deletes everything two weeks after sending.

Includes

  • One-hour Nara kimono snap photo shoot, all original photo data, 20 colour-corrected photos selected by the photographer, female kimono rental from premium kimono to silk homongi, male kimono rental, female hair setting, han-haba obi or silk Nagoya obi, and full coordination with kimono bag, juban underlayer, zori, tabi socks and hair accessories

Excludes

  • Facial retouching and cosmetic photo edits, transport, food and drink, park and temple admission (none of these are stated as included), and the 2,000 JPY reservation deposit; payment at the shop is cash only
