Full description
This is a 50-minute experience in Nara. It is run by Waplus Nara, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.
The price covers Tea ceremony experience, Introduction to the history and cultural background of the, Guidance on tea preparation and consumption and Traditional Japanese sweets. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

We loved the ceremony. The instructor is very knowledgeable and friendly. She turns tea making into an art form. Just a beautiful experience. You won’t be disappointed.
Super instructional session in a tranquil, traditional tatami mat room. The instructor was kind and patient and explained the ceremony well in excellent English. Recommend.
The tea ceremony was amazing. We learned the history of the tea ceremony and made our own tea. It was fun. I highly recommend this activity!!
The tea ceremony was a wonderful experience. We enjoyed the ceremony with the host and another couple. You can opt to rent kimono in advance if you’d like, but we just stuck with our regular clothes. Our host explained to us the history of the tea ceremony from its zen Buddhist origins to Japan before showing us how the tea and utensils are prepared. She also answered a lot of our questions afterward, which was wonderful. We didn’t have time, but if we could have done it again, we definitely would’ve joined their follow-on calligraphy course right after!
The tea master was patent and welcoming, she explained the origins and importance of tea ceremony as a ritual. The place is not busy so she devotes herself to you and your questions patiently. I recommend.
Such a fun time! Great for everyone and the family from husband, kids and grandmother
The whole experience was a lot of fun! Barbara really cared for us and our Chopsticks are one of a kind in the prettiest of ways 💕
We had an incredible time experiencing this traditional Japanese tea ceremony; it was participatory, and the guide was so thorough in explaining and demonstrating everything. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone looking to do this while in Japan.
Lovely guide and great activity!
De gids sprak erg goed Engels. Ze gaf op een fijne en rustige manier instructies. Ook was het interessant dat zij een stukje geschiedenis gaf over hoe een de theeceremonie is ontstaan.
