Full description

Most visitors to Nara never get past Nara Park and Todai-ji — understandable, since those are genuinely the headline sights, but it means the rest of Nara Prefecture's UNESCO-listed temples sit largely empty even in peak season. This private tour, run in a fully licensed green-plate vehicle with a professional driver, is built for travelers who've already done the deer park or simply want to go deeper.

The day starts at Yakushi-ji Temple, founded in 680 CE and one of the finest surviving examples of Nara-period architecture, notable for its elegant three-story East Pagoda — one of the few original structures in Japan to survive over 1,300 years without being rebuilt after fire. From there the tour continues to Toshodai-ji, founded in 759 CE by the Chinese monk Ganjin, who crossed to Japan after five failed attempts and total blindness by the time he succeeded, to establish orthodox Buddhist ordination practices. Its Kondo main hall is one of the largest and best-preserved Nara-period buildings still standing.

The day's centerpiece is a choice between two mountain temples, arranged around your interests: Hase-dera, famous for its long wooden corridor of stairs leading up to a hall housing an 11-metre wooden Kannon statue, with hydrangeas in June and maple colour in autumn; or Muro-ji, a remote, rarely-visited temple set into forested mountains, historically notable as one of the few major Japanese temples that allowed women to practice, earning it the nickname "Women's Koyasan." Because the whole day runs in a private vehicle with hotel pickup, you avoid Nara's often-infrequent regional trains and buses, and can adjust timing and stops as the day goes.
