Tour Itinerary
The schedule below is a suggested plan and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.
Travel from Kathmandu to the gateway of Mundum Trail
Begin your adventure with an early departure from Kathmandu and travel by road toward Diktel in Khotang District. The journey takes you through Nepal’s changing landscapes, from busy urban areas to terraced hills, river valleys, forests, and traditional settlements. Enjoy views of the countryside along the way and observe everyday rural life. Arrive in Diktel, the starting point of the Mundum Trek, and settle into your accommodation.
Enter the remote landscapes of eastern Nepal
After breakfast, begin trekking from the Diktel area toward Chakhewa. The trail gradually leaves the developed road network and enters quieter mountain terrain, passing through villages, terraced farmland, forested sections, and open hillsides. Along the way, encounter local communities and experience the peaceful atmosphere of eastern Nepal. Continue through scenic countryside before reaching Chakhewa, where you spend the night and prepare for the higher sections ahead.
Trek through forests and traditional mountain villages
Leave Chakhewa after breakfast and follow the Mundum Trail toward Dhotre. The route continues through peaceful rural landscapes with forest paths, cultivated hillsides, small settlements, and mountain views. As the trail gains elevation, the surroundings become increasingly rugged and less developed. Take time to appreciate the natural scenery and local lifestyle before arriving at Dhotre, where you rest for the evening in a simple local lodge or homestay.
Climb toward the high ridges around Maiyung
Today the trek continues toward Maiyung, with the trail gradually gaining altitude through beautiful Himalayan forests. Walk beneath rhododendron, pine, and other native vegetation while crossing quiet ridges and mountain paths. Spring can bring colorful rhododendron blooms to sections of the route. As you approach Maiyung, the landscape opens into higher terrain with broader views across eastern Nepal. Settle into your accommodation and prepare for the high-ridge trekking ahead.
Follow scenic ridges toward remote Rawadhap
Continue from Maiyung toward Rawadhap along one of the scenic ridge sections of the Mundum Trail. The route passes through forests and open mountain terrain, gradually revealing wider views across the surrounding hills. The peaceful environment and limited tourist traffic create a remote trekking atmosphere. Along the way, you may encounter local villagers, farmers, or herders. Reach Rawadhap and enjoy the surrounding mountain landscape before spending the night.
Trek higher toward Salpa Bhanjyang
Leave Rawadhap and continue along the highland trail toward Salpa Bhanjyang. The vegetation becomes more alpine as you gain altitude, with open grasslands, ridges, and expansive mountain scenery replacing much of the lower forest. Trek at a steady pace while allowing time to adjust to the increasing elevation. Reach Salpa Bhanjyang and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this high mountain area before resting for the next day's journey toward Silichung.
Reach Silichung Peak and enjoy Himalayan panoramas
Set out early for the trek toward Silichung Peak, the highest point of the journey at approximately 4,153 meters. The ascent crosses rugged high-altitude terrain and requires a steady pace. After reaching the summit area, take time to enjoy the expansive eastern Himalayan scenery. In clear weather, views may extend toward Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and surrounding peaks. After spending time at the viewpoint, descend back toward the overnight area.
Descend through forests and remote settlements
After completing the Silichung section, begin descending toward the lower settlements around Hyakule and Sanam. The trail gradually moves from exposed high-altitude terrain into greener landscapes, forests, and traditional mountain communities. Enjoy changing scenery as the elevation decreases and observe local farming areas and village life along the way. The descent provides a welcome change after the demanding summit section. Arrive at the overnight settlement and relax after the day's walk.
Continue through peaceful forests toward Hanspokhari
Continue the descent from Hyakule or Sanam toward Hanspokhari. The trail passes through forested hills, open countryside, and traditional settlements as the landscape gradually becomes greener and more cultivated. Take in the quiet atmosphere of eastern Nepal and enjoy views of the surrounding hills. This section provides another opportunity to experience local life away from major tourist routes. Reach Hanspokhari and settle into the local accommodation for your final trekking night.
Complete the trek and reach historic Bhojpur
After breakfast, begin the final trekking section toward Bhojpur. The trail continues through rural hills, forests, cultivated land, and traditional settlements as you gradually descend to lower elevations. Enjoy the final views of the eastern Nepal landscape and reflect on the journey through the Mundum Trail. Arrive in Bhojpur, an important town in eastern Nepal, where you can rest and celebrate the completion of the trekking portion.
Return to Kathmandu after your eastern Nepal trek
After breakfast, begin the return journey from Bhojpur toward Kathmandu by road. Travel through the changing landscapes of eastern and central Nepal, passing mountain hills, river valleys, villages, farmland, and roadside communities. The journey provides a final opportunity to appreciate Nepal's diverse countryside. Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to your accommodation, completing your Mundum Trek adventure through eastern Nepal.
Explore Taksar or keep a flexible day for delays
Keep this additional day flexible for travel delays, changing weather, or trail conditions during the Mundum Trek. If the itinerary runs smoothly, use the day to explore Taksar Village and experience its local culture, traditional lifestyle & surrounding landscapes. Alternatively, enjoy a rest day or allow extra time in case earlier trekking sections are affected by weather or transportation delays. This buffer helps keep the overall journey relaxed & flexible without unnecessary time pressure.
