Full description

This is a long day and there is no point pretending otherwise: sixteen hours door to door, with something in the region of eight or nine of them spent on the road. The cultural triangle sits well north of the coast, and a day trip to it from Kalutara means leaving in the dark and returning in the dark. People still do it, because the alternative is committing two or three nights inland, and if your holiday is based on the beach that trade-off can make sense.

Sigiriya is the centrepiece. A granite plug rising two hundred metres from flat forest, converted in the fifth century by King Kassapa into a fortified royal complex with water gardens at its base and a palace on the summit. The frescoes in the sheltered gallery halfway up are the surviving fragment of what was once a much larger scheme, and the mirror wall below them carries graffiti verses left by visitors more than a thousand years ago. The climb runs to about 1,200 steps.

Dambulla comes as relief after that: five caves under a single overhang, holding more than 150 Buddha images, a forty-metre reclining Buddha carved from the rock itself, and ceilings painted to follow the natural contours of the stone. The site has been continuously in use since the first century BCE.

The route also includes stops at traditional craft workshops, typically wood carving, batik or brassware, where demonstrations are given and pieces are for sale. These are optional to buy from.

Transport is a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle with a driver-guide, and the group stays small. Bring things to make the drive tolerable and plan a quiet day afterwards.
