Full description
Sigiriya and Dambulla sit about four hours north of Colombo in the dry zone, which makes this a genuinely long day. Expect a pre-dawn departure and a late return, twelve to fourteen hours door to door depending on traffic through the Kurunegala road. People do it and are glad they did, but it is worth going in with your eyes open rather than expecting a leisurely outing.
Sigiriya is a granite inselberg rising two hundred metres out of flat forest, and in the fifth century King Kassapa built a royal citadel on top of it. What survives is remarkable: water gardens and boulder gardens at the base, the mirror wall with its centuries of visitor graffiti, a sheltered gallery of frescoes painted on the rock face, and the lion's paws that once framed a full lion-shaped gateway. The summit holds the foundations of the palace and a view across the whole plain.
The climb is roughly 1,200 steps, much of it on open metal staircases bolted to the rock face. It takes most people an hour up and it is exposed to the sun, which is the main reason to start early. If the climb is not realistic, Pidurangala rock next door offers the classic view of Sigiriya itself for less effort.
Dambulla is the counterweight: five caves under a rock overhang holding more than 150 Buddha statues and painted ceilings that follow every contour of the stone. Some of it dates back to the first century BCE, with layers of repainting through the Kandyan period. It is cooler, shaded and requires only a short climb to the terrace.
