Should You Book a Colombo Tour Direct or Through an App?

Plenty of Colombo tuk-tuk drivers and private guides will tell you to book direct to skip platform fees, and every big app will tell you their vetting and support make booking through them safer. Both miss what actually matters: can you get a specific question answered by a real person before you pay?

A long day trip to Sigiriya or a Galle Fort loop with Turtle Beach involves real logistics — pickup time, air-conditioned car or not, what happens if it rains. If nobody confirms those details until after you've paid, it doesn't matter whether you found the booking through a driver's number or a polished app — you're booking blind either way.

Booking direct with a verified local driver or operator removes one real risk: a long reseller chain where your money and your question both pass through two or three middlemen before reaching the person who actually drives you. That's genuinely worth avoiding.

It does not automatically mean cheaper, and it does not automatically mean safer. A number handed to you by a guesthouse is also "direct," and has none of the accountability of a platform that vets operators and keeps a payment record you can point to if something goes wrong.

Whichever route you take — a well-known booking platform, a smaller local site, or a driver's own contact — run the same three checks:

1. Message a specific question before paying. A vague or delayed answer is the clearest red flag there is.

2. Ask what happens if the operator can't take your date. If a platform or driver can't give a straight answer on refunds before you've paid, that's not one to trust with your money.

3. Check who actually answers. A reply from a real person who clearly knows the route (not a templated bot message) is the strongest signal that someone will also answer you *after* you've paid, not just before.
