Full description
Be clear about what this is before you book: a fifteen-hour day, roughly seven of them in a car. Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa sit in the dry zone at the heart of the island, four to five hours from the coast, and doing both from Colombo in one push is a serious undertaking. It works, and it saves a night's hotel, but it is not a relaxed day out.
Pickup is very early, usually around three in the morning, so that you reach the cultural triangle before the heat builds. You stop for breakfast on the way. The climb at Sigiriya is best done early: the rock is exposed, the metal staircases hold the heat, and by mid-morning the queues on the narrow sections slow everything down.
Sigiriya is a fifth-century citadel built on a 200-metre granite plug, credited to King Kashyapa. The water gardens at the base are among the oldest surviving landscaped gardens anywhere, the mirror wall still carries graffiti left more than a thousand years ago, and a sheltered pocket halfway up holds the frescoes of the cloud maidens. The summit is the palace footprint, with the plain visible in every direction.
Polonnaruwa follows in the afternoon. Capital of the island in the eleventh and twelfth centuries after Anuradhapura fell, it is far more compact than its predecessor: the royal palace, the quadrangle of religious buildings, the Lankatilaka image house, and above all Gal Vihara, four colossal Buddha figures cut from a single granite face.
Lunch is included at a local restaurant, and the drive back takes around four hours, so expect to reach your hotel late. If you have the flexibility, the same route split over two days with a night in Sigiriya or Habarana is a better trip; this version exists for people who do not have that night.
