Full description
Sigiriya is a granite plug rising two hundred metres out of flat scrub, and in the 5th century King Kasyapa built his capital on top of it. What survives is remarkable: water gardens and boulder gardens at the base, a mirror wall along the western face, the frescoes of court women painted in a sheltered pocket halfway up, and the two enormous lion's paws that once framed a gateway you walked through to reach the summit. The climb is around 1,200 steps on metal staircases bolted to the rock.
The day starts with the drive north from Colombo, roughly four hours on the expressway and then the Dambulla road. Pickups run from Colombo and from the coast at Negombo, Mount Lavinia, Kalutara, Bentota, Hikkaduwa and Galle, so the start time depends where you are.
Dambulla comes first. Five caves under an overhanging rock hold more than 150 Buddha statues and painted ceilings that follow the contours of the stone, some of it dating back two thousand years and repainted across successive reigns. The climb to the caves is a set of open steps up the rock face, about fifteen minutes, and the view back over the plain from the terrace is worth the effort on its own.
After Sigiriya the afternoon turns to wildlife, with a jeep safari in the national park land nearby. This is elephant country: the reservoirs draw large numbers in the dry months, and the Minneriya Gathering, when herds converge on the receding tank bed, is at its peak from roughly July to September. Outside that window elephants are still regularly seen but in smaller groups.
This is a long day in a shared vehicle, with something like eight hours of driving bracketing the sightseeing. It suits people who want the cultural triangle's two headline sites and a safari in one trip from the coast rather than moving hotels.

great day all round, due to being only guests on the tour we were able to be flexible with our day. guide very accommodating and ensured we enjoyed our day. Guide at sigiriya rock was able to help us avoid some of the large queues. Would 100% recommend
The trip was excellent and well organised. It was a long day, but worth it. The view from the top of the lion rock is just amazing. We learned a lot about Sri Lanka on this trip. The village tour was short but relaxing. The local food was great. We really enjoyed the food, in the presence of the two lovely, very nice and welcoming ladies that prepared them. We had a great guide, very friendly and accommodative. We highly recommend this activity.
I had an excellent experience on our day tour to Dambulla, Sigiriya, and the local village. Our guide, Chatu, provided outstanding service, rich historical insights, and safe, comfortable transportation throughout the day. He truly went above and beyond, and we highly recommend booking with this company.
Had a fantastic trip exploring the cultural and spiritual wonders of Sri Lanka! The journey began with a fascinating experience at the Dambulla Cave Temple, where we immersed ourselves in the spirituality and rich Buddhist heritage of the caves. We were then amazed by the incredible engineering and architectural marvel of the ancient Sigiriya Palace City. The day ended on a high note with a wonderful village tour and an authentic taste of traditional Sri Lankan food, making the experience even more memorable. Our guide, Chattur, took excellent care of everything throughout the trip—from the arrangements and transportation to our safety and overall well-being. His professionalism, knowledge, and attentiveness made the entire journey smooth and enjoyable. I would highly recommend this experience and would happily give both the trip and our guide Chattur a 10/10. Truly an unforgettable Sri Lankan adventure!
I had a wonderful day tour. Our guide was very kind and gave useful information during the trip. He always cared for our safety and well-being.
It was an early morning excursion, but I'm really glad I went. Dambulla Temple and Sigiriya Rock were both wonderful, and I would definitely recommend climbing to the top of Sigiriya Rock in particular. Even though I'm not physically fit, I managed to climb to the top. After that, I took an optional safari excursion and got to see lots of elephants. The sight of the mother and baby elephants was heartwarming. However, please allow plenty of time when participating. The return time may be delayed due to traffic conditions on the day. Finally, this excursion gave me the best memories of my time in Sri Lanka.
It was so much fun! It was worth more than the price! Thank you for providing me with a wonderful experience. I am also grateful to Dhanesh, the guide.
A wonderful day. We woke up at dawn, and the hours on the road were quickly forgotten thanks to the magnificent landscapes we saw. The cave temple is very beautiful. The climb up the Lion Rock was impressive, dizzying, and athletic😅 The view from the top is splendid. We then chose the optional tour of the village. It was very good. We were welcomed and treated like royalty by everyone we met. We were amazed!
We had a great day We were well looked after Nothing was too much trouble So appreciated our guides and driver for the day
