Full description

Climbing Sigiriya at first light is a different experience from climbing it at ten in the morning. The stairs are cool, the crowds have not arrived, and the flat scrub plain below holds mist that lifts as the light comes up. It is the reason to accept a pickup at two in the morning.

The rock itself is a 5th-century citadel. King Kasyapa moved his capital here after seizing the throne from his father, and had the summit built out as a palace with cisterns cut into the stone and gardens laid out symmetrically at the base. On the way up you pass the mirror wall, once polished enough to reflect, now covered in graffiti verses written by visitors from the 8th century onward, and the sheltered pocket of frescoes showing court women in ochre and green. The final stretch climbs between two carved lion's paws, all that remains of a gateway shaped like the animal's head.

After the descent there is a stop for breakfast at a local restaurant, then a short drive to Dambulla. Five caves sit under a single overhanging rock, holding more than 150 Buddha images and ceilings painted directly onto the stone, following its dips and bulges. The site has been in continuous use for over two millennia, and successive kings added and repainted, so what you see is layered rather than uniform.

Travel is by private air-conditioned car with your own driver, which matters on a day built around a specific hour: you can be at the ticket gate when it opens rather than working around a group.

Be clear-eyed about the length. Pickup is in the middle of the night, the drive each way is around three hours, and you will be back in Colombo in the late afternoon or evening after roughly fourteen hours. Most people sleep in the car both ways, and it is worth planning a quiet evening afterwards.

The early pick-up at the hotel is a plus. The sunrise is really beautiful Maybe I misunderstood, but you get drivers for the car, not real travel guides. I'm not a nerd, but it felt like I knew more about the destinations than the drivers. The price is pretty high for that... It's okay for me, but the expectation was different.

December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead. Any guide describing one national "rainy season" is only describing half the country. Full breakdown in our best time to visit Colombo guide.
Tuk-tuks are everywhere — insist on the meter or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride-hailing app and usually cheaper than flagging one down, with no fare argument. The coastal railway south toward Galle runs along the sea and costs very little. See getting around Colombo.
Rice and curry is the everyday meal, not a dish — rice with several curries and sambols. Kottu roti is chopped roti cooked with a distinctive clanging rhythm on the griddle, hoppers are bowl-shaped fermented rice-flour pancakes, and lamprais is the Dutch Burgher dish baked in a banana leaf. See the Colombo food guide.
Pettah is the market district east of Fort, and its streets are organised by trade — one for electronics, one for textiles, one for hardware, one for spices. The candy-striped Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar, 1908) is the landmark. Street-by-street in our Pettah market guide.
Galle is the easiest — about 2 hours on the southern expressway. Kandy is only 115 km but 3-4 hours each way on a mountain road. Sigiriya is realistically a 12-14 hour day and is better as an overnight. Honest distances in our day trips from Colombo guide.
Two days covers it comfortably. Colombo is not a museum city and most travellers pass through on the way somewhere else — our Colombo 2-day itinerary sets out a realistic pair of days.
