Full description
The reason to do Sigiriya at sunrise is simple. By nine in the morning the rock is hot, the staircases are queued and the plain below has hazed over. Arrive at opening and you climb in cool air, with the mist still sitting on the fields and the summit largely to yourself. That is what this trip is built around, and it is why the pickup is in the middle of the night.
The drive from Colombo takes about three hours, so you leave in the small hours and reach Sigiriya before the gate opens. The climb is roughly twelve hundred steps up a two-hundred-metre granite plug, past the sheltered gallery where 5th-century frescoes survive on the rock face, up between the lion's paws and onto the summit where King Kassapa's palace foundations look down over symmetrical water gardens.
Breakfast comes after the climb rather than before it, then Dambulla, twenty minutes away, where five caves in a rock outcrop hold more than 150 Buddha statues under painted ceilings. It is a working temple, so shoes come off and the last section is climbed barefoot.
The afternoon is Kandy, two and a half hours south through the hill country. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic holds the tooth relic of the Buddha, an object that historically legitimised whoever ruled the island, which is why the temple sits inside the old royal palace compound beside the lake. Timing a visit with one of the daily puja ceremonies, when the drummers play and the inner chamber is opened, is worth the effort.
Be realistic about the day. With a night departure, two sites, Kandy and the drive home, this runs to around fourteen hours and you will be short of sleep for it. Doze in the vehicle on the way up, and do not plan anything demanding for the next morning.
