Full description

Most Sri Lankan safari listings leave the park permit out, and for a foreign visitor that is another USD 25 to 40 in cash at the gate. This one includes it, which is worth checking when you compare prices.

Udawalawe is two hours south of Ella and it is the reliable park. Created in 1972 around a new reservoir, the farmland the water displaced became open grassland, so the roughly six hundred resident elephants are visible rather than hidden. Sightings are near-certain within twenty minutes of the gate, which is not something you can say about Yala and leopards.

Alongside them: water buffalo, spotted deer, golden jackals, mugger crocodiles on the reservoir edge, and genuinely good birding with a heavy winter influx of migrants.

What you will not see is a leopard. They exist here and are essentially never seen, so if that is the point of the trip, take Yala and accept the three hundred jeeps.

The dawn drive is the one that works — animals move at first light and shelter by nine — and you are back in Ella by early afternoon with the rest of the day free.
