Full description
A tuk-tuk is the right vehicle for Ella. The lanes above the town are narrow, steep and full of switchbacks, the distances between sights are short, and being open-sided at that height is most of the pleasure of moving around here.
The day covers everything. Little Adam's Peak at first light, 45 minutes up a stepped path for the view through the Ella Gap. Ella Rock, the harder walk, three hours return over unsigned estate paths — which is exactly why a guide matters, since the junction where the route leaves the railway has no sign and several plausible alternatives.
The Demodara Loop is the piece almost nobody sees: the railway spirals a full circle to pass under the station it just left, in order to gain height. A short train leg between Demodara and Ella puts you on the line rather than beside it.
The Nine Arch Bridge follows, 91 metres of stone built without steel during the First World War, and Ravana Falls and the zipline over the valley close the afternoon.
Run privately, so if the train is late or the cloud comes down, the day reshuffles rather than falls apart.
