Full description

Doing both Ella walks in a day is a real undertaking — about five hours on foot in the tropics — and it is the trip to take if walking is why you came to the hill country.

Ella Rock is the one that needs the guide. The route starts along the railway from Ella station, runs southwest for about twenty minutes, and then leaves the line at a junction with no sign and several plausible alternatives. From there it crosses estate land where paths branch constantly, and people get lost on it every week. Three hours return, a long uphill on rough ground, ending on an open summit ridge with a wide view back over the Gap.

Little Adam's Peak is the easier one: 45 minutes up a mostly stepped path for arguably the better view, out through the Gap towards the southern plain.

Between them the day takes in a Buddhist temple, the Nine Arch Bridge — 91 metres of stone built without steel during the First World War — and Ravana Falls.

At a shared-group price this is the best value walking day in Ella. The trade is fixed timings and waiting for the slowest walker, which on a five-hour day is a real consideration.
