Ella is a walking town, and the mistake most day tours make is treating it as only that. This one splits the day between the sights and the food, which for most people is the better balance.
Little Adam's Peak opens it at first light — 45 minutes up a stepped path for the view through the Ella Gap. The Nine Arch Bridge follows mid-morning, timed against the day's actual train movements rather than the published timetable.
The tea factory is the bridge between the two halves. Uva tea is genuinely distinct: a dry seasonal wind blows across these slopes from June to September and gives the leaf a character tasters can identify blind. A working factory tour follows the leaf from the withering troughs through rolling, oxidation and firing to the grading table in about forty-five minutes, and explains why one bush yields six graded products at wildly different prices.
The cooking class closes the day. Rice and curry is badly named in English — it is six or seven separate dishes cooked individually and eaten together, not a curry with rice on the side. You grate coconut on a hiramanaya, grind the spice paste on a stone, and cook in clay pots over a wood fire that behaves nothing like a gas ring. Then you eat what you made.
