Ella's sights are small in number and close together, which makes a day covering all of them possible in a way it would not be anywhere else in Sri Lanka. What it needs is somebody who knows the day's actual train times and the tracks that are not signed.
Little Adam's Peak opens the day at first light — 45 minutes up a stepped path for the view through the Ella Gap. Ella Rock is the harder walk, three hours return over estate paths, and it is the reason a guide matters here: the junction where the route leaves the railway has no sign and several plausible alternatives, and people get lost on it every week.
The Demodara Loop is the piece almost nobody sees. The railway spirals a full circle to pass beneath the station it just left, purely to gain height, and it is a genuine curiosity from the period when this line was cut.
A short train leg between Demodara and Ella puts you on the hill line rather than beside it — twenty minutes on the section everybody photographs.
The Nine Arch Bridge, built in stone without steel during the First World War, and Ravana Falls with the zipline over the valley close the afternoon.
