Full description
Ella sits at a thousand metres in a gap between two ridges, surrounded by tea, and it draws people for a mountain climate and two specific sights. This is the trip that does those two properly rather than racing a longer list.
Little Adam's Peak opens the day. Forty-five minutes up a mostly stepped path from the edge of town, easy enough for most fitness levels and for children, and the view out through the Ella Gap towards the southern plain is the reason the town is on anyone's itinerary. Going at first light is not a preference: the air is clearest in the morning in every month of the year, and by nine the summit is a queue for the same photograph.
The Nine Arch Bridge is the other. Ninety-one metres of stone viaduct standing twenty-four metres above a gorge, built during the First World War in solid masonry because the steel earmarked for it was requisitioned for Europe. A local builder named P. K. Appuhami is widely credited with completing the work, and Sri Lankans tell that story with some pride.
A guide is worth having here mainly for the train. The published timetable and reality are different things — services run thirty to ninety minutes late as a matter of routine — and someone who checked at the station that morning knows when to be standing where.
