Ella's sights are small in number, close together and free, which makes them easy to see badly. Everything worth doing here is best before nine in the morning, the walks are unsigned in places, and the train timetable is aspirational. A driver-guide who knows the day's actual train times turns a scattered list into a working sequence.
The day starts on Little Adam's Peak at first light — 45 minutes up a stepped path for the view out through the Ella Gap, the reason most people put this town on a list. Down for breakfast, then the Nine Arch Bridge while a train is due: 91 metres of stone viaduct, 24 metres above a gorge, built during the First World War without any steel because the steel went to Europe.
The Demodara Loop is the piece almost nobody sees. The railway spirals under itself in a full circle to gain height, passing beneath the station it just left, and it is a genuine engineering curiosity a few minutes down the road.
A short train leg between Demodara and Ella puts you on the line rather than beside it. Ravana Falls, Ravana Cave and a zipline over the valley fill the afternoon, and you are back before dark.
