Full description
This is the walking day with a bit of everything else folded in, and it works because Ella is small enough that the spice garden and the bridge sit between the two climbs rather than adding to the day.
Ella Rock is the walk that justifies the guide. The route runs along the railway from Ella station for about twenty minutes and then leaves the line at a junction with no sign, several plausible alternatives and only one right answer. From there it crosses estate land where paths branch constantly, and people get lost on it every week. Three hours return, a long uphill on rough ground, finishing on an open summit ridge with a wide view back over the Gap.
Little Adam's Peak is the easier one, 45 minutes on a mostly stepped path for arguably the better view.
The spice garden between them covers cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, turmeric and the Ayurvedic plants grown in every village garden here. Sri Lanka produces most of the world's true cinnamon, and the difference between it and the cassia sold as cinnamon in most countries is obvious when someone shows you both bark.
The Nine Arch Bridge — 91 metres of stone built without steel during the First World War — closes the day.
