Full description
Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's surf town, on the east coast, and it runs on the opposite calendar to everywhere else on the standard route: its season is roughly May to September, exactly when the west and south coasts are being churned by the southwest monsoon. That inversion is why a July or August itinerary that would otherwise be a compromise can be a very good trip.
Getting there from Ella takes about four hours of driving down the Uva escarpment and out across the dry lowlands, and the road passes several things worth stopping for.
Ravana Falls comes first, a broad cascade below Ella. Diyaluma, Sri Lanka's second-highest at 220 metres, follows.
Buduruwagala is the stop that justifies the route. Seven figures cut into a rock face in the ninth or tenth century, the central standing Buddha sixteen metres high, with traces of the original stucco and orange paint still on the stone. It is Mahayana rather than Theravada, which is unusual here, and it stands in dry scrub with almost nobody around.
A spice garden near Wellawaya covers cinnamon, pepper and the Ayurvedic plants grown in every village here. You arrive on the coast in the afternoon.
