Full description
This is the smartest way anyone has found to see the country between Ella and Demodara, and the reason is simple: you ride down and take the train back up.
Ella sits higher than Demodara, so the outbound leg is a long descent through tea estates, past line rooms and village shops, on lanes that carry almost no traffic. Cycling it means you notice things a vehicle passes — the plucking happening on the slopes, the dogs, the school children, the smell of the estates in the morning.
The Nine Arch Bridge is on the route. You stop, walk down to it, wait for a train if one is due, and get back on the bikes.
Demodara is where the railway does its famous trick, spiralling a full circle to pass underneath the station it just left in order to gain height. It is a genuine piece of engineering curiosity and almost nobody makes the trip to see it.
Then you put the bikes on the train and ride back up to Ella, which is the section everybody photographs, taken in the right direction and without a nine-hundred-metre climb in your legs.
About four hours, and it needs no particular fitness because the hard part is done by the railway.
