Full description
Coming down from Ella to Kandy is the same road as going up, in reverse, and it is just as good in this direction — arguably better, because you descend through the tea country in the morning light rather than climbing into afternoon cloud.
The route runs first to Nuwara Eliya, the hill station at 1,900 metres that the British built and never quite finished making English: a racecourse, a golf course, stocked trout streams and a post office in mock Tudor. Gregory Lake is at the centre of it and worth a walk.
Ramboda Falls comes on the descent, a 100-metre drop a few minutes' walk from the road, and above it the tea estates run continuously. A working factory visit follows the leaf through withering, rolling, oxidation and firing to the grading table.
The last stop before Kandy is the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya — 60 hectares inside a bend of the Mahaweli river, with the palm avenue, the orchid house and the great Javan fig. Then it is fifteen minutes into Kandy and your hotel.
