Full description
Ella to Kandy is usually done up the hill road through Nuwara Eliya. This route goes the other way — down the Uva escarpment, east across the plain to Mahiyanganaya, and then north and west into Kandy — and it is longer, quieter and considerably more interesting.
Dambana is the reason. The Vedda are Sri Lanka's indigenous people, present on the island long before the Sinhalese arrival that the chronicles date to the fifth century BC, and a few communities remain around here. A visit means meeting members of the community, seeing the hunting and gathering techniques they still teach, and hearing their own account of a history that is almost always told about them rather than by them.
Be clear about what it is: a livelihood, and performed to a degree. The community controls the presentation and the money stays local, which is the honest case for going. Anyone selling it as an encounter with people untouched by the modern world is not being truthful.
The home-cooked lunch is with a local family rather than at a restaurant, and the waterfalls on the route are ones the main road misses entirely.
Fourteen hours, so book it as the day itself rather than as a transfer with extras.
