Full description
Ella to Nuwara Eliya is only about two hours of driving, which makes it the easiest move in the hill country and the one most worth padding with stops.
The road climbs nine hundred metres, and the character changes with it: Ella at a thousand metres is warm, scruffy and full of walkers, and Nuwara Eliya at 1,900 is cold, formal and British-built, with a racecourse, a golf course and a post office in mock Tudor.
The Seetha Amman temple at Seetha Eliya is the first proper stop. It marks the valley where Sita is said to have been held by Ravana, and there are depressions in the rock across the stream that are pointed out as Hanuman's footprints. It is brightly painted in the south Indian style and busy with Indian pilgrims rather than foreign tourists, which gives it a very different atmosphere from the Buddhist sites.
Hakgala, next door, is the second of Sri Lanka's great botanic gardens after Peradeniya. It was laid out in 1861 to grow cinchona for quinine and later tea, and at 1,700 metres it grows what the lowlands cannot: roses, tree ferns, cypress and a large orchid collection. The blue magpies here come to visitors.
Gregory Lake and the town centre close the day.
