Full description
Tissamaharama — Tissa to everyone who goes there — is the town that serves Yala National Park, and most people arrive the evening before a dawn safari. Getting there from Ella takes about three hours of driving, and the road drops off the Uva escarpment through some of the best scenery in the south.
Ravana Falls is the first stop, a broad 25-metre cascade beside the road below Ella. Diyaluma follows, Sri Lanka's second-highest at 220 metres, visible in full from the roadside.
Buduruwagala is the reason to take this route rather than the direct one. Seven figures carved into a rock face in the ninth or tenth century, the central standing Buddha sixteen metres tall, with traces of the original stucco and orange paint still visible on the stone. It is a Mahayana site, rare in a Theravada country, and it stands in dry scrub with almost nobody there.
A spice garden near Wellawaya covers cinnamon, pepper and the Ayurvedic plants used in every village here.
Tissa itself has an ancient tank and a large dagoba, and you arrive in the afternoon with time to settle before a 4.30am safari start.
