Full description
Trincomalee sits on one of the finest natural deep-water harbours in the world, and its season is the inverse of the south coast's — dry and calm from roughly May to September, exactly when Galle and Mirissa are unswimmable. For a monsoon-season itinerary that inversion is the whole argument for going.
Getting there from Ella is a long crossing: down the Uva escarpment, out onto the dry-zone plain, and northeast to the coast. About five hours of driving, and this route puts the interesting stops on it.
Mahiyanganaya has one of the oldest stupas in Sri Lanka, traditionally held to enshrine hair relics and to mark the site of the Buddha's first visit to the island.
Dambana, nearby, is the main remaining Vedda community — Sri Lanka's indigenous people, present long before the Sinhalese arrival the chronicles date to the fifth century BC. A visit means meeting members of the community and hearing their own account of a history usually told about them. It is a livelihood and it is performed to a degree; the money stays local and the community controls the presentation, which is the honest version of what it is.
You reach Trincomalee in the late afternoon.
