Full description
Ella to Udawalawe is two hours of driving and about six with the stops, and the stops are worth it because this road drops off the escarpment through country most visitors only see through a window.
Ravana Falls comes first, a broad 25-metre cascade beside the road below Ella, named for the demon king of the Ramayana said to have hidden Sita in the caves above it. Diyaluma, further south, is Sri Lanka's second-highest at 220 metres and is visible in full from the road.
Buduruwagala is the one people remember. Seven figures carved into a rock face in the ninth or tenth century, the central standing Buddha sixteen metres tall, with traces of the original stucco and orange paint still on the stone. It belongs to the Mahayana tradition, which is rare in Sri Lanka, and it stands in dry scrub with almost nobody there.
A spice garden near Wellawaya covers cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and the Ayurvedic plants that grow in every village garden here.
You arrive at Udawalawe in the afternoon, in time to check in before a dawn safari the next morning.
