Ella's headline sights are free and close together, and the reason to take a guide is not access but timing and the ones that are not signed.

Little Adam's Peak opens the day at first light — 45 minutes up a stepped path for the view out through the Ella Gap, and by nine it is a queue for the same photograph. The Nine Arch Bridge follows mid-morning, timed against the day's actual train movements rather than the published timetable, which Sri Lanka Railways treats as a suggestion.

The waterfalls are where a local driver earns the fee. Ravana Falls is the roadside one everybody sees. Pallewela and the smaller falls in the same valley are down unmarked tracks through tea and rubber, and you will not find them from a map. They are also, in the wet season, considerably more impressive than the famous one.

Being private means the day flexes. If the train is late you wait, if the light is good you stay, and if someone wants to swim under a waterfall for an hour that is what happens.
