Ella's headline sights are free and close together, and the reason to take a guide is not access but timing and the ones that are not signed.

Little Adam's Peak opens the day at first light — 45 minutes up a stepped path for the view out through the Ella Gap, and by nine it is a queue for the same photograph. The Nine Arch Bridge follows mid-morning, timed against the day's actual train movements rather than the published timetable, which Sri Lanka Railways treats as a suggestion.

The waterfalls are where a local driver earns the fee. Ravana Falls is the roadside one everybody sees. Pallewela and the smaller falls in the same valley are down unmarked tracks through tea and rubber, and you will not find them from a map. They are also, in the wet season, considerably more impressive than the famous one.

Being private means the day flexes. If the train is late you wait, if the light is good you stay, and if someone wants to swim under a waterfall for an hour that is what happens.

Little Adam's Peak is about forty-five minutes up a stepped path — no scrambling, but it is a climb, and it is worth doing at first light both for the view through the Ella Gap and to have it to yourself. In the wet season the falls are dramatically better and the tracks down to them are slippery and leech-prone; shoes with grip make more difference than anything else you could bring. Swimming under the smaller falls is normal and safe when your driver says so, and not when he does not.

We‘ve had a good day. Nuwan speaks good english. When doing solo, I‘d recommend booking the scooter since you can overtake all the tuktuks! He drives you wherever you want. You can adjust the dayplan as you wish for.

I had a great time with Nuwan. He is very relaxt and flexible. A great photographer and driver. If you travel alone I highly recommend the motorbike tour. You can get around the hundreds of tuk tuks that clog some stops. And it's just fun cruising the mountains. Tip, bring a sweater or vest, it can get chilly later in the day.

Nuwan arrived early before 6am and was very polite introducing himself. We had a fantastic day with Nuwan, he was very attentive and offered local knowledge. His TukTuk skills were great, we felt safe at all times. Nuwan was very supportive when climbing little Adam's Peak and when visiting waterfall. The train ride to the nine arch bridge had amazing sights. We had a great day with Nuwan and wouldn't hesitate to book another trip with him.
